Travel Do’s and Don’ts

Travelling to a new country can be nerve-racking experience, here are some travel do’s and don’ts for Vietnam to put your mind at ease!

Do’s
1) When leaving your hotel to explore bring a map (hard copy or digital) as the streets can be complicated for foreigners.
2) Be sure to drink lots of water, especially in the summer months.
3) Dress discreetly, the Vietnamese generally dress conservatively. Take special care and cover up when travelling to sacred sites such as pagodas or temples.
4) Keep your valuables locked in your hotel room to avoid drawing unwanted attention.
5)Ask permission before taking the photos of locals (not everyone is comfortable with their picture being taken) and at military sites.
6) Be sure to check the exchange rate before exchanging any money.
7) Withdraw money from recognized and reliable banks and atms only. Some of these include ANZ and HSBC.

Don’ts
1) Don’t rush when crossing the street, walk at a slow and steady pase. This enables drivers to anticipate your movements and they will avoid you.
2) Do not give money to beggars on the streets or in tourist centres.
3) “Saving face” is important in Vietnamese culture so do not lose your temper in public.
4) Do not take picture of military installations or institutions.
5) Do not go out alone at night in isolated areas, use your discretion and stay safe.
